Beach Riot

With infectious, gritty, melodic songwriting Beach Riot have been catching people’s attention with their loud fuzz-laden pop tunes. We got in touch with Rory O’Connor (vocals/guitars) to see how the Brighton four-piece are getting on.

WHAT’S NEW WITH YOU GUYS?

Demos demos and more demos! We're getting ready to get back into the studio in a couple of weeks which is really exciting.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY LISTENING TO?

I've been digging into some early Cardigans albums a lot recently. I've always loved them, but I had a blind spot on a couple of their first records. Also Idles have just released some raw as hell stuff which is awesssssome.

WHAT’S THE MOST MEMORABLE SHOW YOU’VE PLAYED?

It's hard to beat our reading and Leeds slots a couple of years back, as those were some huge life goals ticked off! Closer to home we've had some crazy Brighton headline shows with barriers needing to be held up by security guards and worried looking promoters due to moshing. We also had one of the most fun shows ever playing to 8 people in Leeds, with our manager bringing us jager bombs between songs. Even with no one there, playing with your mates is what it's all about.

WHAT’S THE STRANGEST SHOW YOU’VE PLAYED?

Playing a walkabout in Sheffield was kinda strange, and a big old hall in Guernsey pumped full of the local cider was surreal. There's definitely been a few. One in Cardiff stands out, the ceiling was so low I couldn't stand at the front of the stage, and the whole night there was this guy in a Mexican wrestling mask at the bar just eyeballing us.. was still super fun though.

WHERE’S GOOD FOR PRE/POST-GIG GRUB?

Hands down, no arguments, Voo Doo rays in dalston. It's an institution. Also a quick mention to the patcham bakery, which is our pre tour stop as we leave town in the van.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE LOCAL SUSSEX MUSIC SCENE?

Right now and the last couple of years it's better then I can ever remember. We've got sooooooo many incredible bands coming out of here, and most of them are all mates.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE/MOST CHERISHED BIT OF GEAR?

It's hard to look beyond our Bilt guitars. They're made out in Iowa, America, and they very kindly sent both me and Cami one. I also have an old 70s Fender Jaguar that is my dream guitar. On the pedal front, some crazy glitch sounding fuzz from death by audio + my trusty polychorus will be with me till I die.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ALBUM?

That's soooooooooo hard. There's different Albums that mean different things from different times of my life, but I think if I had to pick just one it would be Nevermind by Nirvana. I know it's a bit obvious, but that record changed my life within the first 3 seconds of hitting play.

IF YOU COULD INVITE THREE MUSICIANS, ALIVE OR DEAD, TO A DINNER PARTY WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE, AND WHAT WOULD YOU TALK ABOUT?

Kurt Cobain, Buddy Holly, and David Bowie. We'd talk about feminism, punk rock (Would love to see Buddy's reaction to it), the universe, and mainly I'd just sit there and cry in awe of those three.
